Biotech Labs Are Popular In HawaiiHawaii ScienceLAIE, Hawaii - Papaya farms are among the beneficiaries of a thriving biotech research community in Hawaii. Papaya farms on Oahu's north shore may have the key to rescue orchids from a flower-killing virus. But others are not so sure about the biotech revolution. Pineapples are the leading crop in hawaii and pineapple industry officials are vigorously resisting biotech and genetic engineering research, and some organic cofee plantation owners are worried about biotech. They fear that consumers will reject their crops if they become tainted by genetic engineering. Of the 10600 applications by scientists to grow experimental biotech crops, a large number of the 49300 separate fields are located in Hawaii. Some biotechnology plants tested in Hawaii include corn, disease resistant cotton, soy, and low-nicotine tobacco. In the 1990's, a native Hawaiian scientist named Dennis Gonsalves developed a method for vaccinating papaya trees from a virus that was decimating the papaya trees. The method involves splicing a harmless piece of the virus into papaya tree DNA. Papayas are a $16 million crop. Some researchers have been trying since 1999 to grow decaffeinated coffee beans outside in Hawaii. Kona coffee farmers worry about such a plant mixing with their high caffeine varieties.
